UPDATE: RALLY CANCELED!
After grueling 12+hour negotiations on Wednesday, October 7, the Sweetwater Education Association’s bargaining team reached a tentative agreement with SUHSD early Thursday morning. The agreement removes the most draconian take-backs proposed by the District (including salary and healthcare cuts, retiree healthcare cuts, furlough days, and a new “management rights” clause). Staffing ratios and class sizes will temporarily increase for the upcoming years, but the contract preserves existing salary schedules and healthcare coverage.
Because of the settlement, the SEA rally originally scheduled for Monday, October 19 has been canceled.
Sweetwater is the second largest school district in San Diego county. Their contract, like the SDEA contract, expired on June 30, 2008. The District had declared impasse in bargaining and was preparing to impose a contract, including the cuts outlined above. This settlement preserves their core bargaining priorities, though the short-term increases in staffing ratios could increase some class sizes to 40 or more students. Check out the details of the agreement and photos from their member rally on the SEA web site.
