Pack the Board Meeting to Fight Layoffs
Posted on April 10, 2010
Taking Action NOW
SDEA’s analysis of the District’s own data continues to demonstrate that the District can successfully close its projected budgetary gap without issuing any layoff notices. Nonetheless, the School Board still believes that some layoff notices may be necessary to ensure that the District’s budget is balanced for the 2010-2011 school year—a belief SDEA contests, based on the District’s own most current numbers.
All of us need pack the School Board meeting on Tuesday, April 13 and make sure the Board hears us loud and clear. The Board members are making a choice to issues layoffs—an unnecessary choice that will hurt educators, students and our community. Hiding behind the State or the County is not an acceptable excuse.
The way we will succeed in combating layoff notices is the same way we have always succeeded in moving the Board — with collective shows of strength. The bottom line is that if all 576 probationary educators attend the meeting on Tuesday, we have a much better chance of protecting our jobs and our classrooms than if 50 people show up. It is up to us, now, to protect ourselves and our schools.
