SDEA MEMBERS APPROVE TENTATIVE AGREEMENT
SDEA’s Elections Committee has just completed counting the 4,501 votes cast.
SDEA members voted in unprecedented numbers and have approved the tentative agreement with SDUSD.
67% of our members voted yes and 33% voted no.
SDEA will immediately begin working with SDUSD to implement the agreement and ensure that schools are fully staffed come September.
TA RATIFICATION RESULTS
Total Votes: 4,501
YES: 3,033 – 67%
NO: 1,468 – 33%
This ratification voter turnout was higher than the contract ratification votes in 2006, 2007 and 2010. In 2006, 3,043 members voted. In 2007, 3,221 members voted. In 2010, 3,170 members voted. This level of participation speaks to strong member engagement and our strong union.
As the final vote count indicates, many members of our union voted against this TA. Although a large majority voted yes, it is important that the views of those who opposed the ratification be respected. Discussion and disagreement are healthy in a democratic union.
Now that the TA has been approved, we must come together over the summer and into the fall to pass the Governor’s tax initiative. Passing this initiative is very important for the future of our schools. San Diego will be an important battleground for this statewide initiative. Educators and parents can play a key role locally in helping make sure the initiative passes.
Our union and our schools can win, but we have a lot of work to do between now and November to educate our communities on the importance of making education a top priority in California. Over the next few months, we will provide various opportunities for members to help in this process.
To begin with, please reply to this email to volunteer time and energy to help make sure the initiative is a success.
Though we have many challenges ahead of us, we are in a good position to be successful by remaining united. Together we can defend our professions and protect our schools.
Together We Are Stronger!
