SDEA Local Endorsements Ending
On Wednesday, March 14, 2007, the San Diego Education Association's
Board of Directors voted to end SDEA's local endorsements for
financial services, auto and homeowner's insurance programs. Specifically,
this action will end SDEA's local endorsement of both MetLife
Resources and the Horace Mann Insurance Company effective at the
end of the school year.
This
action comes in the wake of regulatory changes in the industry,
as well as a reexamination of our fiduciary responsibility to
our members. However, we strongly believe that the loss of a local
endorsement will not affect the positive business relationships
that many of our active and retired SDEA members currently have
with these two companies.
In
fact, it is clear from discussions with representatives of MetLife
and Horace Mann that they will continue to place a value on the
long-term relationships they have built with our members over
the years. To that end, they will advertise in the Advocate and
continue to attend SDEA conferences. They will also continue to
offer competitive programs tailored to the needs of public educators.
Many
of you are familiar with MetLife Resources as the vendor of discount
movie and entertainment tickets. Although this service will no
longer be offered through MetLife, SDEA is actively working to
devise an alternative program so that our members will still have
access to a discount ticket program. More details will follow
soon.
Finally,
it is important to note that SDEA's action to end our local endorsements
does not affect the CTA endorsement of A+ Insurance (formerly
California Casualty) or First Financial Credit Union. As the second-largest
CTA affiliate, SDEA members will continue to have the opportunity
to work with these companies to obtain insurance and financial
services designed for CTA members.
