A CONVERSATION WITH DIANE RAVITCH

SDEA is proud to announce that Diane Ravitch, the most vocal and credible advocate against high-stakes testing and phony “reform” movements, will be joining teachers for an evening discussion on the need for educators to pushback against the special interests that are attempting to destroy public education. Ravitch is an education historian and a research professor of education at New York University. As the assistant secretary of education under President George H.W. Bush, Ravitch brings decades worth of knowledge and expertise on what schools really need in order to succeed.

The event takes place Monday, April 15 at 5 p.m. at Kearny High School, and is open to all SDEA members. Please help get the word out to any educators at your site who may be interested in attending this special event.

Core Training, Part I: Advocacy

Our rights at work are like a muscle; they grow stronger when we exercise them. Union members sometimes exercise their rights through the grievance process, but what’s a grievance? How does one know if the issue is a “good grievance”? What are the steps in the grievance process? What is the role of an AR/CR in a grievance meeting? This workshop will cover these advocacy basics, the role of an AR/CR at work, and beyond. This training is appropriate for ARs, CRs, Site Organizers and those union members who may be interested in being an AR or CR in the future.

2012 – 2013 SDEA Rep. Council Dates

SDEA Representative Council meetings take place the third Wednesday of every month at 4:15 pm at the SDEA office, unless otherwise specified. ARs and CRs should check the website periodically for information regarding special Rep. Council meetings, which may be held the first Wednesday of every month. Members should also check the website calendar for information on upcoming training opportunities.

May 1st Community March Against Education Cuts!

More than 1000 educators, parents, and students will take to the streets on Tuesday, May 1^st, marching from Roosevelt Middle School to the SDUSD Education Center to protest education cuts and layoffs.

San Diego Unified issued pink slips to almost 1,700 educators – that’s nearly 1 in 4! But on May 1^st marchers will remind the district that the way to grow our economy and create good jobs for San Diego is to invest in San Diego again. The means investing in theworkers of our future – our kids – by giving them the schools that create an educated, innovative workforce – not cutting educators.

The event begins at 3:30 at Roosevelt MS. Work at a late-start school? If you can’t make it to Roosevelt before the march takes off at 4:15, join the march at the Education Center from 4:45 – 5:15 before it loops back to Roosevelt.

ARs picked up flyers for the march at SDEA Representative Council meeting on April 18 to share with members, and for members to pass out to parents. A printable flyer in English and Spanish is available here (2).
