Special Education

There are a number of new provisions addressing the impact of special education populations on general education classrooms.

These include: Section 30.7.1 which states "the intent of the District to notify the affected unit member(s) prior to assigning students with special needs into the regular classroom."

Section 30.7.2 which recognizes the impact on the workload of a general education teacher when a special needs student is placed in their classroom. This section states, "The principal should assign students in such a way as to minimize the impact and equalize student load." In the past, there have been sites that assigned half-a-dozen or more special needs students to a single general education teacher while other teachers did not receive any. This is an example of the type of situations that led to this language.
