District Staff Development Make-up Days

The three District wide staff development days, established in Section 8.1.2 of the Contract, are subject to different rules for paid leave than other workdays. The only paid absences for these days are the illness or injury of the unit member (verified by a medical doctor's note) and Bereavement Leave. Unit members missing a District wide staff development day for other legitimate reasons have been able to attend a make-up day to recapture both the staff development and the day of pay. This year the District unilaterally decided to not offer make-up days denying. SDEA refused to accept the district decision. The make up days have been reinstated as a result.

Initial decisions as to legitimate reasons for an absence will be made by the District with and appeal process heard by the Contract Administration Committee.

The three make up dates for this year are:

Monday, March 25, 2002
Saturday, May 18, 2002
Wednesday, June 19, 2002

These dates allow both year-round and traditional calendar employees two opportunities to attend. Additional dates are scheduled through the 2004 - 2005 school year.
