Column Advancement on Salary Schedule
By Steve Kaplan, UniServe Field Organizer

The salary schedule is designed to recognize the importance of continuing education and training. This is reflected as unit members move across the columns found on the salary schedule based on a commitment to being a life long learner. The schedule has five columns, starting at "A" and culminating at "E". Details on what education and training is creditable and timelines for filing your documentation are found in Appendix A, Sections 2.00 through 2.05 of the Contract. Important information includes:

Timelines for filing documentation:

  • To advance one or more columns on the first day of contract service in a school year a minimum number of qualifying units or the advance degree must be posted on an official transcript by September 30 and the transcript must be filed with the District on or before November 15. (Appendix A, Section 2.051)
  • To advance one or more columns on February 1 a minimum number of qualifying units or the advanced degree must be posted on an official transcript by January 31 and the transcript must be filed with the District on or before March 15. (Appendix A, Section 2.052) In both cases, if the timeline is missed the column movement occurs the first day of the month following receipt of the transcript.

Course work creditable for column advancement:

This includes, under qualifying circumstances, upper division and graduate work (2.021), District sponsored professional development education (2.022), lower division, extension, professional continuing education, and travel courses (2.023), continuing education units and professional development units (2.024), course work completed after meeting bachelor's degree requirements (2.025), advanced degrees (2.026), and repeated courses (2.027). In addition, professional degrees and highly specialized curricula other than in education or the arts and sciences may be creditable (2.03). Finally, it is possible to earn up to eight units for summer work experience (2.04).

Take some time and familiarize yourself with these sections of Appendix A.
