Long Term Leaves

The contract provides a wide range of long term leaves. These include:

Most long term leaves are either a Category I (Planned Leave) or a Category II (Parental, Health and Home Responsibility Leave). Each type has basic differences in the following areas:

1.      Who is eligible?
2.      Application deadlines
3.      Timing; and
4.      Frequency of Leave

Category I leaves are limited to three full academic years in a ten year period. Section 10.6.1.1 Category I leaves are available only to permanent status unit members. Second year probationary members can apply for such a leave for the following year when they will become permanent. Section 10.6.1.2
Category I leaves must be received by the Human Resource Services Division by March 1 for the following school year. Section 10.6.1.3

Category II leaves may be for a portion of an academic year and may be extended for up to five additional academic years. Section 10.7.1 Category II leaves are available to all unit members who have an employment contract with the district.
Category II leaves can begin at any time during the year. There is no March 1 deadline.
