School Board Issues RIFs

Only one Board Member, Sheila Jackson, was courageous enough to say “no, these (the layoffs) are not the right things to do.” Let the other Board Members know that you want them to “think out of the box”, stop being “victims” of the legislature, and start doing the real work of making tough decisions all year round about school finances.

SDEA has shown the Board how to run their house in a more efficient way, but they have refused to take our advice. They have different choices they can make. The first step is to start making employees their priority.

RESCIND THE RIFs!!!

Tell them your story, tell them to be a responsible employer, tell them we can’t do more with less:

• Why did only three Board members vote in favor of the February 26 Board Resolution (a resolution which fell short of calling for increased revenue)?
• Why did the Board vote down a motion to reduce their reserve (which would have saved 200-250 jobs)?
• Why is the SDUSD Board laying off educators when Long Beach, Sweetwater, and many other large urban districts have weathered this storm without laying off employees?
• Why are they pursuing another school bond, putting us further in debt, when they have excess property that could be sold to pay for maintenance and repairs?
• Why is SDUSD playing the “victim” when they were complicit in creating a layoff situation?

The School Board cites the need for “flexibility” to justify the sending out over 900 layoff notices to SDEA members. They say they need to have the flexibility to lay off this number “just in case” the budget is as bad as projected. Their “flexibility” means the lives of our sisters and brothers across the District are being destroyed. SDUSD Trustees don’t need “flexibility”—they need PRIORITIES!

Let them know you VOTE and this time the School Board needs to EARN YOUR VOTE!
