Ten-Point Program to Support our Students & Communities
Protect Our Students and Communities
- We want to protect our students and communities from the uncertainty of a new federal administration that seeks to privatize our schools and disrupt our students’ right to a high-quality public education.
- We want to preserve federal funding for vulnerable students (11% of San Diego Unified’s budget) that includes Title I funding for low-income students, Title III funding for immigrant and multilingual students, and IDEA funding for students with disabilities.
- We want welcoming schools where all families can safely bring their children to learn, regardless of immigration status.
Safe and Nurturing Schools
- We want equal treatment for all students, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.
- We want expanded restorative justice practices to address the growing social, emotional and behavioral needs of our students.
- We want to defend our academic freedom to teach the truth with a community-based and culturally-responsive curriculum that prepares our students to be critical thinkers and changemakers.
- We want clean school facilities that allow students to focus on their learning in healthy and safe environments.
Stability for Our School Communities
- We want to end destabilizing layoffs and transfers during the school year that change students’ teachers and interrupt critical connections with families.
- We want to improve access to affordable housing and other resources beyond the school day for our students and their families.
- We want more community schools that provide ongoing services and support to fit each neighborhood’s needs, run by the people who know our children best – families, educators, staff and the students themselves – all working together.
